Local Artistry in the Making
Local artist Bob McDermott has been creating a sculpture piece to be installed on a soon to be built boardwalk that overlooks the harbor side of our community. This project called "The Vigil" portrays an Icelandic family's mother, daughter and son standing and waiting. They are looking for their husband's fishing boat to return safely home to the Peace Arch City. The project is in the middle of being created and funded. Two of the heads are ready to be send to the foundry after months of creation while working with local Icelanders who modeled to help Bob gain visual perspectives.
This unique endeavor will soon be expanded to create multiple statues to be strategically placed in Blaine honoring the many facets of our city's legacy. This vital project is now under the tax umbrella of our Pacific Arts Association which is also assisting with logistical and promotional support. These significant marker buoy art pieces should become a walking tour attraction bringing us visitors and publicity. There is a heart and soul of a young boy in this 73 year old Semiahmoo artist who wants to help us put a face on our history and honor those who made Blaine what it is today.
When we reach out and embrace our neighbors we see pictures that enhance everyday life in our own international community.
